Bison's Decision on House Settlement Remains Pending as Deadline Extends
The University of South Dakota and Murray State University have opted into the House settlement, while North Dakota State University delays its decision.
In the aftermath of the landmark House vs. NCAA settlement, college athletics remain in turmoil, particularly among Group of Five and FCS schools in Division I. These schools now have an extended deadline until June 30 to decide whether to opt into the settlement for the 2025-26 season. The settlement allows schools to directly pay athletes and adhere to new roster limits.
North Dakota State University (NDSU) has yet to make a decision, but an announcement may be imminent. South Dakota and Murray State, fellow Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) schools, have already opted in. The University of North Dakota is reportedly 'leaning towards opting in.'
South Dakota athletic director Jon Schemmel announced their decision on social media, thanking university leaders for their support. Murray State, which joined MVFC in 2023, also opted in, with athletic director Niko Yankto emphasizing their focus on building a competitive program.
MVFC athletic directors and presidents will meet to discuss scholarship limits and other implications. Opting into the settlement allows teams to scholarship all 105 players, unlike the current FCS limit of 63 scholarships for 85 players.
NDSU athletic director Matt Larsen mentioned that 'grandfathering of roster spots' is causing mid-major teams to hesitate. He explained that schools have a three to four-year planning phase to adjust to roster caps.
