Minneapolis Shelter Expands to Address Growing Needs of Homeless and LGBTQ Youth

Avenues for Youth breaks ground on a new $24 million facility in north Minneapolis to provide shelter and support services for homeless and LGBTQ youth.

Avenues for Youth has launched a new $24 million facility in north Minneapolis, set to open in 2026. This expansion aims to address the increasing challenges faced by homeless and LGBTQ youth. The shelter will offer 30 beds for overnight stays and 20 beds for long-term stays, along with various support programs. According to recent data, nearly 1 in 5 people experiencing homelessness in the Twin Cities identify as LGBTQ+, a rate four times higher than the national average. This initiative comes in response to the growing need for shelter and supportive services in the area, particularly for young people who often lack the support systems available to others.
